The Ohio State city of Cleveland earned the nickname ‘Forest City’ and a racecourse of that name opened in 1850. Races were organised by the Cleveland Jockey Club, and that inaugural meeting was staged from 27th to 31st August 1850. Later the circuit was used in 1863 by the Cleveland Driving Club who were keen to hold ‘driving races’ without the need to bet on the result. The idea of using the name ‘Forest City’ became popular and the Race Track was the first in a series of businesses making use of the name. Within a year the Forest City Agricultural Warehouse had opened, followed bu the Forest City Hotel.
